Steve Nash Charity Classic

Update (7/22/07): SueB has now posted her recap of the game which she attended in person.

Editor's Note: Thanks, SueB for posting this. Sounds like the Suns backcourt will be well-represented at this event. Nice find on the Nash interview as well.

Steve Nash is hosting his foundation's third annual charity basketball game one week from tonight (July 21) in Vancouver, BC. I'm very pleased to say I'll be at the game! The article below says Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa, and Marcus Banks are all expected to be there. Having never attended a Suns' game (or indeed any NBA game), I'm very excited that I'll be able to see these guys up close, even if it's a just-for-fun game. I'm sure they'll put on a good show.

I apologize that I can't figure out how to embed links here (I'll edit this if somebody will answer me and tell me how). But here is a link to the Charity Classic's official site:

And here's an interview with Steve that appeared in today's Canadian press, as he works to build publicity for the event: All About Nash

Oh Canada!
I would recommend going for the sole fact that Canada is one of the coolest places that I have ever been. Unfortunately, the one time I was there was game five of the Spurs series this past May. I spent the evening in Windsor Casino sports bar cursing the spurs.

Oh, Canada
Yes, we're making a grand tour of the northwest - flying into Seattle but then ferrying straight to Victoria for a couple of days, then to Vancouver for 3 days (and the game) and then back to Seattle and home.

I also like visiting Canada, and I hope it's going to be great fun all around. Better than being there for Game 5. Actually, Game 5 was pretty good for a long time. Just not at the end when it mattered, unfortunately.

Regarding the linked interview with Nash, has anybody else heard the ridiculous "broken (sic) nose was a hoax" internet rumor that Nash's interviewer asked him about. I was just as incredulous reading it as Steve seemed to be when responding to the question. How in the world would you .... do ... that? And more importantly ... why?

Great article
My favorite part is Steveie Green waxing eco-friendly:

I also hear the event is going to be carbon-neutral, thanks to eco and reforestation projects in the province?

That's also an evolving target of the foundation. Last year, we started it, but this year we're improving on it. We are definitely looking at the eco footprint we are creating with this game -- as far as flying people in and the amount of energy and paper and things that we use -- and are trying to make up for that footprint in a variety of ways, like using biofuel vehicles and 100-per-cent recycled paper.

and I love that he plays soccer w/ regular dudes and does it not just to keep in shape but so that he doesn't get burned out on basketball. How about the 3 time MVP (I am boycotting Dirk's gift) not wanting or needing to play hoops so he can come back fresh and excited. Dude's just a total stud.

Going to Canada today
I don't know if it makes more sense to edit the first post or just add comments about my experience. I'll do this for now. Maybe I'll edit the diary when I post about going to the actual game.

We (my husband and our two kids) made our cross-country flight yesterday with no problems. We flew into Seattle (sheesh, renting a car at that airport was a horrendous experience) and then made our way via ferry and construction-riddled roads to Port Angeles, WA, from where I am typing. If you're unfamiliar with the Northwest (as I pretty much am), that's directly across the Strait of Juan de Fuca from that basketball hotbed of Victoria, BC. Today, we're ferrying across. We'll spend a couple nights in Victoria before heading to Vancouver. No, we don't plan to look around for Steve Nash's elementary school or anything like that! I've heard Victoria is a beautiful city, so we're going to check it out.

I have to mention that I felt a little bit funny reading Steve's quote about striving to keep the event "carbon neutral" since we did fly in. But both the planes we flew on yesterday were completely full, FWIW. And we plan to do a lot of travelling by foot and mass transit on our visit.

Post a new diary?
Actually, it would probably be best if you posted a new diary once you're ready to tell us about the actual game instead of editing the old one. That way it will show up as a "New" submission, and people will be able to spot it easier.

Will do
Will do. BTW, here's another nice Nash article ahead of Saturday's event.

Vote for Steve at espn.com
Oh, and one more thing ... it looks like I won't have internet access for the next couple of days, so I hope at least one person will see this and pick me up to vote for Steve Nash  later today in ESPN's (admittedly pretty ridiculous) "Who's Now?" popularity contest.

Steve won his first-round "match" with Serena Williams and is now up against LaDainian Tomlinson in the Round of 16. I think voting for this matchup starts at 6 pm Eastern/3 pm Pacific later today.

Vote for Steve, again !
It's time to vote again ! Steve Nash now faces a much tougher contender, LaDainian Tomlinson in round two of the Who's Now ESPN contest. Keep voting for Steve, I am sure we can make it even against the best RB in the NFL. If we can help Steve to the final round, He'll find a way to beat Tiger.

Steve Nash Blog
I managed to get online in Victoria after all! Although I see with some incredulity that LaDainian Tomlinson beat Steve Nash by a 2-1 margin. Stupid ESPN fantasy geeks. Oh, well. This is the sort of thing that Nash himself couldn't care less about.

Anyway ... I wanted to come here and quickly point out that Steve has a blog entry posted today at his website. While mostly talking up his event and the good works it supports, he ends with this:

"What's not a joke is that I'm still pissed at the way the playoffs went down. The suspensions, the nose , the knee and of course not quite playing well enough to overcome all this. And I hate, "you'll do it next year". Although with bitter disappointment next year looks like a gift."
