Matrix Mania Part 1 - Shawn Marion Day Begins

Last Thursday, we celebrated our own personal "Amare Day" here with a couple of posts dedicated to the Suns' beast in the middle. If you missed them, they are here and here. Today, we turn our attention to another member of the Suns' big three who makes fantasy owners everywhere smile with glee: Shawn Marion AKA The Matrix. Marion's unique and versatile game is, in my mind, every bit as important to the Suns' continued success as Nash's passes or Amare's dunks. That's hard to prove because he hardly ever misses a game, but one has only to watch him hustle from end to end making deflections and steals, defending players of all sizes, and grabbing critical rebounds when the Suns need it most to know how much Shawn would be missed if he wasn't around. Plus, he's just downright fun to watch with all of those high-flying alley-oop dunks, and his ability to appear out of nowhere to make the big play.

Like last time, this will be split into two posts. This one will include some quick facts and trivia items, and tomorrow's will be filled with YouTube videos, and anything else I can find that I think is appropriate. So, without further ado...

A Few Quick Facts about The Matrix (from Wikipedia, Marion's NBA player profile page, and other sources):

Full Name: Shawn Dwayne Marion

Birth Date: May 7, 1978 (Waukegan, Illinois)

College: UNLV

Height: 6'7"

Weight: 228lbs

Trivia:

Also, if you haven't seen it yet, check out this interview with Shawn's mother that Suns.com did last season.

on Marion
So many good thoughts, so many hustle plays, like the rebound that gave Nash a second three point shot that he made in a big game last yr. I have a friend that has family that works directly with the Suns, and he says it's pretty common knowledge that the Suns run fast and are in great shape, but Marion is another level above them. He simply can run and hustle more, and longer than anyone, and what's amazing is he's doing this against younger players also. I've always thought if he could improve his ball handling and one on one ability, he'd be the best all around player in the league. He's fun to watch, and I have to go back to work...

Plus, I liked the coment from 7 seconds or less about the guy whose job it is to keep an eye on players while on trips. He said if there's one player he doesn't ever have to worry about getting into trouble, it'd be Marion. Cool guy, it's criminal Bowen is thought of as a great defensive player, he's not, Bowen is a thug and a clever cheat, Marion, now he's and honest hard worker.

Another cool comment from the same book that really made me laugh, something about the coaches trying to tell marion to go out and bump, body up, push down, basically get really physical with this
opposing player. And Marion just kind of laughed because the coach was saying such a thing, as if he'd ever do something like that, he wouldn't, Marion is a class act and has been grossly underated as a player.

There's only one problem with Marion in my mind, he's making so much money that it hurts the Suns ability to get other great players. But that's the price I guess, plus he does deserve it. But, to me, Marion, Nash, and Amare should be getting 10-12 million each, no more, no less, leaving an extra 10-15 million (or so) for 1-2 more very good players. All 3, Nash, Marion, and Amare can make as much money as they want in endorsements also, so why limit the team. If I were Nash, that's what I'd be hoping for.

It's real simple in my mind, we all know Marion, Nash, and Amare will be great, it's all about Barbosa, Diaw, and Bell. If those 3 can play better in next yrs playoffs than this yr, I like our chances. People forget how tough (won't say bad, because I'm a fan, and those 3 have done so much for us (Suns)) a series they had against S.A.

hooray Beer, hooray the Matrix (it's real)... like the gorilla is the best mascot, Marion might easily have the best nickname.

Look at his competition, STAT, sorry Amare, try again. Nashville and Nasty are good,

Anyone know Barbosa, Bell, Diaw, and Hill nicknames

Shaq, wow, someone really put a lot of thought in that one %$@$%

We should try and come up with nicknames for Barbosa and Bell at least.

Marion and the All-Defensive Team
Great comments about Marion. I wish I had thought of some of these when I was writing my post. :) I really wanted to work in some kind of mention about Marion's inexplicable, inexcusable All-Defensive Team snub, as well as my previous rant about it, but it just didn't fit with the rest of what I had to say. Nice job pointing out that Marion gets it done without resorting to shady tactics.

thanks TexSun
Marion should start a separate team called in 3 seconds or less :-)

Nicknames
BTW, here are the nicknames I know of:

Barbosa: LB and The Brazilian Blur are the two I hear most often. I've also heard him referred to as Beep-Beep or Meep-Meep a couple of times (i.e., The Roadrunner).

Bell: Ra Ra is the only one I can think of, but I think there's another I'm forgetting.

Diaw: 3D.

Not sure on Hill.

James Brown
Marion is the hardest working guy in the NBA.  The funny thing about his conditioning is that I think he only looses energy when he's sitting on the bench.  I was a so-so high school athlete and now I'm only a couple of years older than he is but always complaining about how old I am.  The athleticism in the NBA amazes me and to be among the top athletes in that league is something I can't get my mind around -- I guess its an enigma on par with astro-physicists trying to explain the Singularity before the Big Bang.

For YouTube videos, please, please, please find the one from the first game against Dallas in 2006 where Nash sends him an alley-oop and he sticks his crotch on Dirk's head to dunk it.  Please!

I found a link.  Use it (or something like it).  Best play of last year for so many reasons.

Yes, that will definitely make the cut
Thanks for finding that. I will certainly be including it in tomorrow's Matrix YouTube-fest. If anyone else has any favorites, be sure to let me know.

sweet
with the technology today, there needs to be some sort of camera and invisible line, like the football first down line, showing how high some of these guys (very few) are jumping. Spectacular, it really is, thanks for link, gotta love youtube.
